LODGE HISTORY

History of Granville Masonic Lodge No. 380

as told by

Worshipful Brother Clyde Davis

Granville Masonic Lodge No 380 was charted in 1884. The lodge is located at the intersection of Woodland Church  and Graham Sherron Roads in Southern Granville County.

The Lodge had approximately 60 to 70 members at the time of the split in 1914. About 35 members charted Sunrise Lodge No 615, 2 or 3 members went to Wake Forest and the rest stayed with Granville 380. Master of newly charted Sunrise 615 was Gene Mangum and the first Master of Granville 380 after the split was Elwood Davis, brother of Clyde Davis.

The Granville County "Bailey School" was located at what is now the intersection of Woodland Church and Graham Sherron Roads. The school was burned and when it was rebuilt, the Lodge which was a short distance down the road moved onto the second floor of the school. The Lodge and the School built the building together. The thought at the time was that if the Lodge was in the building the school would not be destroyed again. Sid Bailey gave about one acre of land for the building. The building and land would go to whoever remained at the location. When consolidation of Granville County schools occured, the county was going to move the building to Wilton.  Elwood Davis told them that they could not move the building because of the agreement with the Lodge when it was built. The County ended up moving a side room  and leaving the main structure.

In early 1990's a deed was obtained for the land the lodge was located on and with donation of land from Wesley Bailey and donations of funds from lodge members and others in the Wake Forest area, the present building was erected. As of January 2002 the lodge has 38 members.

Note: Some of the information on Sunrise 615 (now defunct) came from The Grand Lodge records on Alfred Green Lowery who was a member of Granville 380 and demitted to the newly charted Sunrise 615.  At his death, he was a member of Milbrook # 97.
